Scholarships and Fees

ANU Scholarships

The ANU offers a number of scholarships to graduate students, both research-only and by coursework. For full details, consult the Scholarships section of the Graduate School Prospectus.

The following scholarships provide a stipend, which was (for most scholarships) $18484 tax-free in 2004:

• Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), ANU PhD Scholarships*, and ANU Graduate School Scholarships (GSS) (PhD only, usually full-time)
• ANU Master Degree Scholarships* (Masters by research only)
• Re-entry Scholarships (PhD, Masters or Graduate Diploma)
• ANU Alumni Association PhD Scholarships*
• Indigenous Australian Graduate Scholarships (any graduate degree)
• Australian Development Scholarships (ADS)* (any graduate degree)

Awards marked with a * above are open to international students. Research degree students may also be provided with supplementary scholarships, which can be at varying rates and are also tax-free. International students can also apply for the following scholarships to cover tuition fees (see below):

• International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)
• ANU PhD Tuition Fee Scholarships

Students who are awarded an ADS scholarship or an ANU Alumni scholarship also have their tuition fees covered.

Temporary financial assistance is also possible through the PARSA Student Loan Fund . There is also temporary support available through the ANU Endowment Accomodation Bursary

Fees

Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents in postgraduate research degrees are normally provided with RTS (Research Training Scheme) places, which means that there are no tuition fees to pay.

All students commencing postgraduate coursework degrees are liable for tuition fees, which are calculated on a unit basis. These can be covered by ADS or Indigenous Australian Graduate Scholarships. Australian citizens and permanent residents who enrol in graduate coursework degrees may also be eligible for the Postgraduate Education Loans Scheme which provides a loan similar to HECS, to be repaid once their income reaches a threshold level.

Students other than Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents are liable for International Student Fees, which can be covered by IPRS, ADS, ANU Alumni or ANU Tuition Fee Scholarships.
