Office accommodation: Each student has an office with a desk,
chair, lockable filing cabinet or drawer, and computer terminal in
a secure area within one of the MSI's two buildings.
Each student's office has internal access to toilets and bathrooms.
The two buildings housing the MSI (the John Dedman Mathematical
Sciences Building and the Moran Building) are connected by a
completely enclosed, multi-story glass-sided walkway. The John Dedman
Building also contains the MSI's Common Room, available for use by
all members of the MSI, containing fridge, microwave and coffee
machine.
Conference attendance: Each student has access to funding for
conference attendance. A PhD student will be offered support to
attend at least two conferences within Australia during their research
program, with funding coming partly from a central area of the MSI,
and partly from one of the MSI's seven research programs or from a
research grant. In some cases support can be provided for attending a
conference overseas.
Excellent IT support: including access to X-terminals, an
PCs and Macs, software covering
mathematical and non-mathematical applications, and helpful and
friendly IT staff. There is also opportunity to access to the ANU's
extremely good supercomputer
facilities, which now play host to the
National High Performance Computing
Center of the Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing
(APAC). Hardware includes a Compaq Alphaserver SC
supercomputer, a 120 terabyte
mass storage system and a visualisation laboratory.
You may also like to access the MSI servers from off campus. In this
case, the MSI will make
a contribution towards ISP connection charges.
Local administrative support is provided by the administrators of the
Department of Mathematics and the Centre for Mathematics and its
Applications, depending on the location of your supervisor. They will
deal with administration internal to the MSI such as room
allocation, conference registration and travel, as well as day-to-day
housekeeping matters.

- stationery supplies,
- a photocopier,
- a fax machine,
- mail facilities (including
a pigeon hole for receiving mail), and
- the telephone.
Reasonable
use of the phone for local calls is unrestricted, and long
distance calls can be made by arrangement.

Australia, with its extensive collection of mathematical books
and serials.
Scholarships: A number of scholarships
are available to graduate students at the ANU.
