Algebra and Topology ProgramThe Algebra and Topology Program in the Mathematical Sciences Institute is involved in research of all areas of algebra in the broadest sense. Recent areas of interest for our academic staff and various others involved in the program have been algebraic geometry, algebraic K- and L-theory, finite groups, homological algebras and Lie algebras. For full details see our Research page. We can also supervise PhD and Masters students in any area of algebra. You may like to see what areas our current students are studying, or have a look at more information on graduate studies in the mathematical sciences. The research of the Algebra and Topology Program is also related to that in the Analysis and Geometry, Applied and Nonlinear Analysis, Advanced Computation and Mathematical Physics programs. We have a semi-regular Algebra and Topology seminar series, and also keep a list of events such as conferences, some of which we host. In particular, the year 2003 is a Special Year on Algebraic Geometry and Topology in the MSI. You can also find some on-line resources, such as local software and links to external software. The convenor of the Algebra and Topology Program is Amnon Neeman. Recent HighlightsIn recent years, members of the program have proved some impressive results. Amnon Neeman published a 449-page research monograph in the prestigious Annals of Mathematics Studies series. The book proves many new theorems about triangulated categories. Neeman also found a counterexample to a 40-year-old result, which had been extensively applied in the literature. Members of the program have been invited to give plenary talks at many international conferences. Several members of the program have spent periods of a few months as invited guests in England, France, Italy and Spain. Roozbeh Hazrat has been invited to spend all of 2004 at the Max Planck Institute in Bonn. The program currently accounts for an ARC Large Programme Grant.
