Murray Batchelor awarded an Honorary Professorship from Chongqing University (June 2008)

Congratulations to Murray Batchelor for being awarded an Honorary Professorship from Chongqing University. Professor Batchelor will provide mathematical physics expertise to the newly established Centre for Modern Physics which reports directly to the University President. The University currently has 60,000 students and is located within Sichuan Province.

Donations for the Chris Heyde Postgraduate Scholarship in Probability and Statistics (Apr 2008)

Professor Chris Heyde (1939-2008) contributed substantially to many areas of Probability and Statistics, while also serving his profession internationally. Among his numerous awards were Fellowship of both the Australian Academy of Science and the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, as well as Membership of the Order of Australia. He chaired Statistics Departments at Melbourne University and The Australian National University, and was also a Professor at Columbia University, New York. He was the mentor and adviser to a generation of young researchers.

To honour his memory, his family and friends wish to establish a scholarship to encourage postgraduate studies in the research areas of probability and statistics. We invite you to contribute to the Chris Heyde Postgraduate Scholarship and support future students at ANU. More Information




Rodney Baxter's contributions to physics recognized by Physical Review Letters (Apr 2008)

Rodney Baxter's contributions to physics by announcing significant discoveries and by initiating new areas of research have been recognized by Physical Review Letters, during the celebration of PRL's 50th anniversary.




Neil Trudinger awarded Leroy P Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition (Jan 2008)

Neil Trudinger has been awarded the prestigious American Mathematical Society's 2008 Leroy P Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition for his book Elliptic Partial Differential Equations of Second Order written with the late David Gilbarg. The prize was announced on January 7 at the Joint Mathematics Meeting in San Diego, California.




Xu-Jia Wang awarded the 2007 Morningside Gold Medal of Mathematics (Dec 2007)

Xu-Jia Wang has been awarded the prestigious 2007 Morningside Gold Medal of Mathematics at the triennial International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians. The award was presented to Xu-Jia at the 4th International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians, Hangzhou in December.




Peter Hall awarded Matthew Flinders Medal and Lecture (Jan 2006)

Australian Academy of Science: The 2007 Flinders Medal and Lecture for research in the physical sciences has been awarded to Professor Peter Hall, FAA, Australian National University.

The Matthew Flinders Medal and Lecture recognise scientific research of the highest standing in the physical sciences, and honours the contributions of Australia's early scientific researchers. The Lecture is awarded every second year at the Annual General Meeting of the Academy.

DoM student Tim Trudgian wins Monash award (Jan 2006)

Twenty-one year old ANU graduate Timothy Trudgian is off to Oxford to undertake a PhD in mathematics after snaring a General Sir John Monash Award.

Iain Johnstone Elected to National Academy of Sciences (May 2005)

Former student (honours in 1977), and regular visitor to the MSI, Iain Johnstone was recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

Richard Brent awarded the 2005 Hannan Medal

Richard Brent has been awarded the 2005 Hannan Medal by the Australian Academy of Science for his work in applied and computational mathematics.

Richard was Foundation Professor of Computer Science at ANU and held a Chair in RSISE before taking up his current position as Professor of Computing Science and Fellow of St Hugh's College, Oxford in March 1998. He was a member of the original CMA back in the early 80s. He took up his Federation Fellowship in MSI on March 14 2005.

MSI highly rated in citation listing (Nov 2002)

In late 2002, the Institute for Scientific Information produced a list of the most cited scientists over the past ten years or so, and the ANU rates particularly well in the field of Mathematics. Number 4 is Iain Johnstone, Adjunct Professor in MSI, and former student in the Department of Mathematics, with 1100 citations from 16 papers. Number 7 is Peter Hall with 909 citations from 176 papers. In the institutional stakes, UNSW (#35) and ANU (#40) are the only Australian universities in the top 100.
