The Australian
Mathematical Sciences
Institute (AMSI) is a national institute established through a
grant from the Victorian Government, and funds from over twenty
Australian institutions.
In 2002 the Federal Government announced funding which enabled AMSI
to run a program of summer courses for honours and postgraduate students
in the mathematical sciences. The first two such programs were run
in early 2003 at the University of Melbourne, and early 2004 at the
University of New South Wales.
Following on from these successes, AMSI and its
International Centre of
Excellence for Education in Mathematics will be running a similar program
in January and February 2005 at the Australian National University in Canberra.
Students will enjoy a stimulating atmosphere and opportunities for the
interchange of ideas both with one another and with the lecturers.
This aspect has been universally praised by the students in previous years.
The feeling of cameraderie and the opportunity to overcome a sense of
isolation were cited as among the strong features of the ICE-EM/AMSI
Summer School.
At the discretion of their home university, Honours students may
be able take courses for credit towards their degree. Contact your
Head of Department or Honours coordinator for guidance on this matter.
Participation in the 2005 Summer School is by
application.
The program of courses
has been announced, and more detailed information is continually being
added. You can stay informed about further developments via the
updates page.
Preliminary information on travel to and
accommodation in Canberra is available,
as well as answers to some frequently asked questions.

Some students may also be interested in the
APAC Summer School on Advanced Computation,
10-21 January 2005, or the Machine
Learning Summer School, 24 January - 4
February 2005, both at the Australian National University.
The International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics is
managed by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute.
Funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Education,
Science and Training.
