Seconday Level Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics, and the Mathematical Sciences Institute of
which it is a part, are involved with Mathematics at the College and High School
levels in a number of ways.
This article discusses the philosophy of what we are attempting to do.
ANU Secondary College
This program is a collaboration between the Australian National
University [ANU] and the ACT Department of Education and Training to
provide advanced courses for Year 11 and 12 students in ACT Government and Private Schools.
See here and here for more information.
Students
come to the ANU two hours a week for three quarters in each of years 11
and 12. The mathematics classes are taught by specially selected teachers.
The syllabus and course materials are developed in collaboration with ANU
academics
who
will
also give special lectures. Students and teachers have full
access to ANU library and other facilities. Early admission
to the ANU and University credit are associated with this program.
Students studying Mathematics undertake a Minor at the ANU and normally
combine this
with a Major-Minor from their home college/school to take out a Double Major.
Other courses currently on offer are Chemistry and Physics.
Here is information concerning the Mathematics
Program, including Text and Notes.
Professional Development Workshops for Teachers
This is a series of two workshops each year, intended to introduce contemporary areas
of mathematics and applications. In 2006 and 2007 the topics paralleled the 4 component
parts of the ANU secondary college course. In 2008 and subsequent years the topics will discuss extensions and contemporary applications of topics treated in College and High School Mathematics. Here is
information concerning Past and Future Workshops.
