ANU Maths Day, Friday 28 May 2010, is an exciting and challenging experience for year 12 students from schools in the ACT and NSW.

Intensive Mathematics Bridging Courses. Applications close 1 February 2010 (for the summer course) and 5 March 2010 (for the semester 1 evening course). Especially useful for Engineering students with only 1 or 2 unit mathematics from college.

Mathematics Drop-In Centre. Find help with your Mathematics problems

PhD Scholarships. Applications for ANU and Australian Postgraduate Awards are due on the 31st October. For more details contact the MSI Graduate Coordinator.

Honours Scholarships. Deadline of 31st October is coming up for ANU Honours scholarships.  Applications for MSI, Hilary Booth and Boyaparti honours scholarships are due on the 30th November.


Introduction

The Department of Mathematics at The Australian National University  is part of the Mathematical Sciences Institute. It is located in the John Dedman Building (Building 27) adjacent to the Manning Clark Lecture Theatres. 

Mathematics is the study of universal patterns and structures; it is the quantitative language of the world; it underpins information technology, computer science, engineering, and the physical sciences; and it plays an increasingly important role in the biological and medical sciences, economics, finance, environmental science, sociology and psychology. Have a look at Math Moments from the American Mathematical Society to get some idea of the range of applications of Mathematics.

By 2020 it is estimated up to 70% of all job categories are likely to change, 35% will disappear and be replaced by jobs that do not currently exist.

“Employers … are more likely to hire someone with a good background in mathematics” (Ross Gittins, economics editor, Sydney Morning Herald).

The 1999 US Jobs Rated Almanac ranked 250 jobs based on salary, work environment, security, stress level, physical demands, and outlook. The top five jobs were in mathematics or computer science and 9 of the top 10 were maths or computer related.

The Department of Mathematics, provides a unique opportunity within Australia to study Mathematics. We provide a stream of advanced courses from first year through to honours year. These courses are open to anyone with the appropriate prerequisites, not only those intending to undertake a fourth (Honours) year in mathematics. They are strongly recommended for students needing to apply mathematics in other disciplines. They will be found particularly useful for students in the physical and biological sciences, engineering, computer science and mathematical economics. These courses provide small class sizes which allow students access to some of the best Mathematicians in Australia. In addition we provide a full suite of courses supporting the quantitative needs of many areas, as demonstrated by our strong involvement in a range of mathematically oriented majors.

Majors

As part of the Bachelor of Science you must choose to do two single majors or a double major.  You can do a single or a double major in Mathematics. Also you can combine a major in Mathematics with other majors.

Honours Pathway Courses / Honours Pathway Options

The Department offers courses at a higher (or honours) level in years one to three for students wishing to study the subject in greater depth. These courses are recommended for students intending to undertake research in any mathematics based discipline as well as those wishing to take Honours in Mathematics in their fourth year.

College of Science Discipline Sub-Committee in Mathematics

This sub-committee is the initial forum for all teaching and learning matters associated with mathematics in the College of Science. For instance proposals for new course, programs, majors in mathematics or related areas should go through this committee.

The current chair of the committee is Dr Stephen Roberts and agenda items for the meetings of the committee should be sent to him.
